The end of the year is packed with finals, standardized tests and, for the seventh grade class, elections for the 2026-27 Student Congress. At Carrollton, student government is a vital part of our school’s mission to empower young women to be leaders.
“In a class officer, I look for someone who can gain the attention of the room, leads, and is eager to serve the community,” said assistant dean of student life Mrs. Aguiar. She said that elections should be about who is better equipped to serve our class and not about popularity. “Student council in schools is important because you want a group of your peers to be able to represent your voice and be a liaison between the student body and the adults.”
This year, there were nine candidates running for four different positions: president, vice president, secretary and, a new role, sustainability chair. (The sustainability chair plans events to promote sustainability and responsible use of resources at Carrollton.) The candidates created posters, fliers, and stickers for Campaign Day on May 6. They were also tasked with writing a speech that was under 500 words to present to the seventh grade class on May 7. Following the speeches, seventh graders voted for the candidates and, after a few run offs, the winners were announced on Tuesday, May 12.

Congress Secretary: Abigail Diez ‘31

What skills, talents, and perspectives do you bring to the Student Council?
I am determined to follow through with what I am asked to do. I am a great leader, and I will make sure that nothing is out of place.
What are your goals and ideas for next school year?
My goals are that everyone has fun and that we have an amazing eighth grade year before we head off to high school. I have ideas for a wig-snatching contest, for our dance, and for “color wars” that we can do with other schools.
What do you want people to know about you?
I want people to know that I didn’t run because I thought this was cool. I ran because this is something that I genuinely have a love for, and I feel that I would do great as your secretary.
