Fernando Mendoza’s journey to becoming one of the most celebrated quarterbacks in college football is a story of talent, hard work, and determination. As the quarterback who led Indiana University to a national championship and who won the prestigious Heisman Trophy just this year, Mendoza has proven that dedication and leadership can turn big dreams into reality.
According to friend of the family Mrs. Fernandez, it all started when he was a little boy. Mendoza grew up watching University of Miami games with his face painted orange and green, cheering the team on and aspiring to take one of the player’s places one day. But at the age of 10, when Mendoza’s parents, Elsa and Fernando, signed him up for a little boy’s football league, he surprisingly hated it and repeatedly begged his parents to quit; however, they refused and, as a result, instilled in him the quality of always finishing what he started. This was only the beginning.
By high school, Mendoza became a star quarterback. He led his team to multiple victories and broke several school records. As a 2-star recruit from Columbus High School, Mendoza initially tried to walk on at UM but was not offered a spot. In his early career, 130 schools overlooked him. After spending time at Cal, he transferred to Indiana, where he achieved immense success. Following his breakout, UM reportedly offered a significant NIL deal (possibly as high as $3 million) to bring him back, which he declined. Mendoza ultimately led Indiana to a national championship victory, defeating his childhood dream college in the process.
“I got declined to walk-on at the University of Miami,” said Mendoza after the game. “Full circle moment here playing in Miami.” In the title game, he played with focus and intensity, completing key passes and leading scoring drives when it mattered most. His performance earned him the Most Valuable Player award and secured Indiana’s place in college football history.
This same season, Mendoza received the Heisman Trophy, given each year to the best player in college football. Mendoza became a symbol of what hard work and perseverance can accomplish.
Off the field, Mendoza is known for his humility and kindness: “Fernán is always incredibly kind to all of us,” said Mendoza’s cousin Lillian Figueroa ‘26. “Even if we don’t see each other all the time because he is at college, he always remembers little things about us, and he’s always ready to help out the family with whatever they need.”
He often credits his family, coaches, and teammates for his success. Caro Gabriel ‘28, another of Mendoza’s cousins said, “Fernán is an extremely kind person whose parents are equally kind and super hardworking. His parents always love and support him, which is one of the main reasons I think he is so successful.”
He also gives back to the community by supporting youth football programs and encouraging young athletes to stay focused on their goals. “He is really hardworking and an all-around good person,” said Figueroa. “He’s really dedicated to helping his mom and raising money for [multiple sclerosis] MS.” His success is even more meaningful to those who know and love him.
Mendoza’s story is far from over, but his achievements already place him among the greats of college football. From a hardworking kid with big dreams to a Heisman-winning national champion, he shows that with effort, discipline, and heart, anything is possible.
