On Feb. 19, Eric Dane, a well-known actor, lost his life at 53 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). From his big break in “Grey’s Anatomy” to his late appearances in “Euphoria,” Dane left a lasting impact on his audiences.
In April 2025, Dane announced he had ALS, a progressive neurological disease that affects nerve cells and muscle control. Despite this daunting diagnosis, Dane refused to be held back; instead, he became an avid advocate for ALS treatment. In September 2025, he helped launch a three-year campaign that aimed to raise over $1 billion in federal funding for research. Dane also advocated for ALS awareness in his own craft by guest-starring on an episode of “Brilliant Minds” in November as a firefighter struggling to accept help after an ALS diagnosis. In addition, Dane joined the board of directors of Target ALS, an organization dedicated to research for treatments and a cure, in December.
Although his recent advocacy has inspired and touched many, Dane had already spent decades impacting people through his acting career. Originally from San Francisco, Dane got his start in acting in his high school’s production of Arthur Miller’s “All My Sons”, where he played Joe Keller, but his professional debut came in 1991 with a guest appearance on “Saved by the Bell.” Dane continued to guest star on various shows, including “Wonder” and “Roseanne,” throughout the 90s. In the 2000s, Dane received more prominent roles, including a recurring role on “Charmed” as James Dean. Then, in 2006, Dane had his breakthrough on “Grey’s Anatomy” as the arrogant heartthrob, plastic surgeon, Mark Sloan. While it was only supposed to be a guest role, Dane left the audience so intrigued that ABC had to bring him back. In search of a role beyond that of a heartthrob, Dane took on more serious roles in shows such as “The Last Ship.” Recently, Dane shocked audiences with his performance in HBO’s hit show “Euphoria “as Cal Jacobs, a complicated villainous character.
Along with leaving a lasting impact through advocacy and his acting career, Dane also shared a powerful message in a planned goodbye video. During an interview with Netflix in November 2025, Dane, knowing the interview would be released after his death, left a powerful message for his two daughters, Billie and Georgia. In this message, he advised his daughters to live actively in the present, to find a passion, to choose friends wisely, and, finally, to fight with everything they have, no matter what.
Dane will be remembered not only for his characters but for the hard work and dedication he put into everything he did. His determination to continue to work and fight til the very end leaves a lasting legacy that goes beyond his roles
