There is already a lot of anticipation for the 2026 World Cup. This time it will take place all across North America, including Miami. “I am mostly excited about the World Cup being in Miami. I feel like the atmosphere is going to be really awesome,” said Bianca Thorslund ’30.
One new development for the 2026 World Cup is that the event has expanded from having 32 teams to now having 48 teams competing. Although more countries will have the opportunity to compete in the event, it will definitely make for a busier schedule. “With 48 teams, I feel like the games are going to be a lot more hectic, and I feel like some games will be missed,” said Thorslund. Even so, it is a step for the soccer industry, showing the growth in interest worldwide.
Who do people think will win the World Cup?
According to a poll of 62 junior high students at Carrollton, 32.8% think Argentina will win; 27.9% think Spain will win; and 19.7% put their bets on Brazil.
“Spain definitely has a good chance because they have maintained consistency,” said Thorslund. However, some individuals feel that the underdogs could win it all. “Panama, for instance, could win because they have consistently been improving, and even beat the USA before,” said Thorslund. From the poll, three students think France could win, and one student thinks Uruguay could be the champions.
Who will attend the World Cup this year?
Most sports fans only get to experience watching a game on television but attending a game in person would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “It would be really memorable to witness a game live,” said Thorslund.
According to the same poll, even though the event will be in Miami this year, 42% said that they will not be attending, while 27% said they will go, and another 27% said they aren’t sure yet.
One reason may be the high prices. Tickets for games in Miami range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. But some students are simply not soccer fans. “I have no interest in going to the World Cup,” said Marion de Armas ‘30.
Soccer is not the only draw to the World Cup though. The international aspect is also one thing that attracts fans. “The international element makes it more exciting since all the fans around the world can root for any country they desire,” said Thorslund.
What is certain is that with how much energy is being predicted for this event, this World Cup may turn out to be one of the best.
