The Centro Mater Childcare Center is a non-profit organization that offers valuable help and education for underserved children from low-income families in Miami. Founded by Sacred Heart nun Mother Margarita Miranda Otero in the 1960s, the center serves Cuban immigrants and their families.
Over the years, Centro Mater has grown to include 1,500 children, ranging in age from 6 weeks to 12 years old. Despite its rapidly growing enrollment, the waiting list is very long due to limited funding and volunteers.
Carrollton has a long history with Centro Mater. Many students volunteer there over the summer and at service events during the school year—especially on Service Day.
This school year, Bianca Garcia ‘27 and Natalie Deshapelles ‘27 created a committee at Carrollton to organize service events at Centro Mater for student volunteers.
Volunteering at Centro Mater not only makes a meaningful difference for the center but leaves a lasting impact on the volunteer.
“The first time I volunteered at Centro I remember being so nervous about whether the kids would like me,” said Maya Flint ‘27. “But, by the end, they kept asking me when I was going to come back because of the meaningful connections I made with them.”
Every year, Carrollton hosts a fashion show, “Ready for the Runway” to raise funds for Centro Mater. Many Carrollton students become aware of the center through this event.
“From when I was five years old to eighth grade, I participated in a fashion show with all my friends,” said Garcia. “I learned all the proceeds went to a non-profit daycare…I wanted to continue that connection, so I decided to volunteer with all my friends and, from then, I have been constantly volunteering.”
Centro Mater is filled with dedicated teachers who care for the education and wellbeing of children. Members of the Carrollton community can support Centro Mater by volunteering, donating funds or supplies, and spreading awareness about its mission to help children and families in need.
