The MTV Video Music Awards is the annual 3-hour award ceremony to honor and recognize the best in the music video industry. It was hosted by Megan Thee Stallion and featured live performances by artists such as Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Karol G, Benson Boone, and more. There are many artists who had multiple nominations such as Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, and Benson Boone.
The public had access to vote for who they believed deserved each award among sixteen categories. Some of the categories include Best Trending Video, Best New Artist, Song of the Summer, Best Group, and VMA Most Iconic Performance.
Sabrina Carpenter, who has recently gained popularity from her new hit songs “Espresso” and “Please Please Please,” has been making music for some years now. Carpenter made her debut with her single “Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying” (2014) and was cast as one of the main characters in the show “Girl Meets World” which was released in the summer of 2014. As a first-time nominee at this year’s VMAs, she was nominated for 6 different awards and took home the award for Song of the Year.
Another artist that has been around for a while but is recently gaining even more fame is 22-year-old pop singer Billie Eilish. After releasing her song “Ocean Eyes” in 2015, Eilish became famous, which helped her become viral on SoundCloud. She has received many awards since then including nine Grammy awards and five Video Music awards. This year, she had four nominations at the VMAs and ended up winning the Video for Good award for her “What Was I Made For?” video from the Barbie movie.
Chappell Roan has risen to fame in recent months by performing at music festivals like Coachella, Governor’s Ball, and Lollapalooza. The young artist released her debut single “Die Young” in 2014 under the name Kayleigh Rose on Youtube. This song led to Roan being discovered by Atlantic Records. She later signed to them in 2015 at the age of 17. Chappell was a first-time nominee in this year’s VMAs and won Best New Artist.
Another musician who had multiple nominations in the VMAs was Benson Boone, a 22-year-old American pop and rock singer. After making the top 24 in American Idol and then quitting the show, he became widely known. In an interview with American podcaster Zach Sang he said, “The reason that I quit American Idol is because I wanted to do music…I don’t want people to be like, ‘Oh Benson Boone. American Idol blew him up.’” Boone explained that if he was going to be famous, he wanted to be famous because of his music, not because of possibly winning American Idol.
This past year, Boone achieved his goal of becoming known for his music. Along with his nomination for Best New Artist, Boone’s latest hit song called “Beautiful Things” was nominated for Song of the Summer and Best Alternative, the category in which it ultimately won.
