On Jan. 19, under the lights of Hard Rock Stadium, Indiana and Miami faced off in the College Football Playoff National Championship that turned a night of football into a pivotal moment of sports history. With the national title on the line, both teams took the field determined to leave everything behind, creating an electric atmosphere that kept fans on their feet throughout the night. “I was standing the entire game,” said Bella Whitby ’27.
Indiana entered the game undefeated while Miami arrived with momentum built from key victories, holding a 13–2 record. From the first few minutes, it was clear that neither team planned on backing down. The matchup quickly turned into a competitive battle between two well-matched programs, each fighting for a place in college football history.
As the first quarter unfolded, Indiana struck first with a field goal, taking an early 3–0 lead. Moving into the second quarter, quarterback Fernando Mendoza led the Hoosiers down the field, resulting in a touchdown that extended Indiana’s advantage to 10–0. Heading into halftime, Miami knew they could not afford to slow down and would need a strong response to stay in the running.
The Hurricanes answered in the third quarter as quarterback Carson Beck connected with his offense to drive Miami into the end zone, narrowing the score to 10–7. Just as Miami began to build momentum, Indiana responded with another touchdown, pushing the lead to 17–7. The pressure mounted as both teams battled for every yard, fully aware that this game would determine whether their efforts all season long would end in a championship celebration or a heartbreaking loss.
The fourth quarter delivered nonstop action. Miami found the end zone again, motivating the Hurricanes’ sideline and giving fans hope for a late comeback. Indiana quickly answered with a touchdown of its own, refusing to let the momentum shift. Miami struck once more, tightening the score and setting up a close final stretch. “At the end, we had a turnover,” Miami head coach Mario Cristobal told reporters post game. “We had a chance to win all the way to the end, but we didn’t get it done.”
Whitby felt heartbroken over losing such a close game. “I love Carson Beck, but I started crying when he threw the turnover, because I knew we lost the game.” In the closing moments, Indiana sealed the game with a field goal, setting the final score at 27–21 and securing the national title for the Hoosiers.
As the final seconds went off, Indiana players celebrated at midfield, embracing teammates and coaches after completing a perfect season and capturing a championship that will be remembered for years to come. Quarterback of the Hoosiers and 2026 Heisman Trophy Winner Fernando Mendoza said, “We’re always going to put all of it on the line. I want to give all the glory and thanks to God there.”
For Miami, the loss marked a bittersweet ending to a remarkable run, as the Hurricanes made their first national championship appearance since 2003, reminding fans and players of how far the program has come.
In the end, the night became more than just a football game. Under the lights at Hard Rock Stadium, Indiana and Miami delivered a performance that showcased not only athletic talent, but also the heart and determination that make historical moments like this unforgettable.
