Dig Pink is an annual series of volleyball games to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer in partnership with the Side-Out Foundation, a non-profit organization whose goal is to “help people with metastatic breast cancer see more tomorrows.”
In volleyball, side-out means to take back control of the ball; the Side-Out Foundation helps people take back control of their lives from breast cancer.
“As a school by women and for women, breast cancer is a disease that affects millions of women, and so for us to be able to raise money for both research and diagnosis of breast cancer is very important to me so we can help save the lives of women around the world,” said Head of School Mrs. Gillingham-Rivas.
“The students at Carrollton need to be aware of the importance and understanding of what early screening is like, what kind of cancer it is, prevention, and ways to treat it,” said Upper School Head Mrs. Consuegra.
Another large part of why Carrollton does Dig Pink is to build community.
“As a new student, I feel like this Dig Pink experience has been so amazing because it helped bring the community closer, especially as a new student,” said Marianne Murrle ‘29.
The pep rally also celebrates members of the Carrollton sports teams and the blue and gold teams.
Many traditions make Dig Pink a special event for students and faculty. One of the most memorable is the dance team and their amazing performances.
“I love performing for everyone during Dig Pink, and I think it’s great that the Side-Out Foundation supports breast cancer awareness and that it brings so much knowledge to all of us,” said Anna Calderin ’27.
The message and community building of Dig Pink are so beautiful and really show why all the students of the Sacred Heart community love coming to school here so much.
“I love it because I love the joy, and the pep rally includes everyone at Carrollton. My favorite part is the joy that surrounds the day,” said Mrs. Gillingham-Rivas.
