What led you to accept your current position as Chair?
A deep commitment to education and philanthropy motivated me to accept the nomination.
What are your main goals as Chair, and how do you stay focused on them?
My goal is to make UM an engine for excellence. I stay focused by aligning closely with the university’s evolving priorities.
What qualities are essential for serving on a college board?
Dedication to education and philanthropy, a strong work ethic, and an understanding that board service is a selfless, unpaid commitment.

How do you define and measure success for UM?
Success varies by function. Our aim is to deliver exceptional teaching, research, and healthcare, while preparing students to thrive beyond graduation.
What is your working relationship with President Joe Echevarria like?
Joe and I speak almost daily and meet weekly to align on strategic priorities.
How do you manage your many responsibilities, and who supports you?
I rely on a strong team across my businesses, which employ about 40,000 people. Personally, I’m supported by my wonderful wife Annie, my daughter Carolina, and my son Michael.
