As summer comes closer, many people begin stressing about looming tests and assignments during exam season. To relieve that stress, I have a bit of good news. Around the corner is Summer Blockbuster Season. So, what movies should we be anticipating for the rest of the school year and into the start of summer?
To start off, just last much, “The Minecraft Movie” was released. This movie, though silly, has a talented cast including Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Emma Myers. Based on the popular video game “Minecraft,” in this movie, a portal pulls four misfits into the Overworld, a bizarre, cubic world that “thrives on imagination.” The group must find a way to get back home.
“Hell of a Summer” was also released in April. This comedy/horror film is a great way to start off the summer movie season. Set in a summer sleep-away camp and starring Finn Wolfhard from “Stranger Things,” the counselors are getting the camp ready before the campers arrive when a masked killer begins killing the staff.
Then, last week, a new installation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was released, “Thunderbolts.” This Marvel movie features recurring characters like Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), just to name a few. The action-packed movie forces these characters to “embark on a dangerous mission where they confront the darkest corners of their pasts.”
Coming up on May 23, Disney’s live action “Lilo and Stitch” will be released. This heartwarming remake of the beloved Disney classic follows the story of Lilo who adopts a dog—only to discover he’s actually an alien experiment named Stitch. The film aims to capture the magic of the original while introducing it to a new generation.
A few days later, on May 30, a new movie in the karate kid franchise will come out. “Karate Kids: Legends” stars Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso from the original 1984 movie as well as Jackie Chan from the 2010 movie
Finally, as summer officially begins, the live action “How to Train your Dragon” will be out on June 13. This movie is based off of the original animated series. This movie will show Hiccup (Mason Thames) as he defies centuries of dragon-fighting when he befriends Toothless, a Night Fury dragon.
Hopefully, these movies will provide students with some motivation to focus for the rest of the semester.
