Under the guidance of Upper School math teacher Ms. Cannon, Carrollton’s new Mathletes team prepares for math competitions every Tuesday and Thursday, taking practice tests, completing worksheets and packets, and learning advanced material. On Jan. 25, they put their knowledge to the test for the first time at the Florida Association of Mu Alpha Theta January Regional 2025 Competition hosted by American Heritage Broward School (AHS).
Algebra II
The first to compete as a team were the algebra II students. Lila Malmierca ‘27, Gabriella Perez ‘27, Alexandra Coto ‘27, and Sofia Sotelo ‘28.
The team competed in several question rounds against other schools. Each question had four sections on which they earned points based on the time taken to answer and the number of correct answers.
Their final team score was 62, which meant they placed 10th out of 27 total schools.
After the team competition, the algebra II students rushed over to the other side of AHS’s campus to take individual exams. Students had to answer 30 questions, with subjects ranging from conic sections to logarithms to arithmetic means. Malmierca, Perez, Coto, and Sotelo were joined by Drennen Wester ‘27, Maya Flint ‘27, and Carolina Torres ‘27. They had an hour to complete the exam..
The top three scores from Carrollton went to Malmierca, Perez, and Sotelo.
Precalculus and Calculus
While algebra II students were competing as a team, the precalculus and calculus teams took their individual exams. Precalculus students Scarlett Lie-Nielsen ‘27, Daniela Eljaiek ‘26, Andrea Yu ‘27, Audrey Prabhakar ‘27, Sophie Forero ‘27, and Grace Diez ‘27 were tested on particularly tricky subjects from probability to matrixes to trigonometry. Calculus students Mila Fanjul ‘25, Antonia Valdes’25, Natalie McMillan ‘25, Chiara Ortiz ‘25, Paulina Ros ‘25, Olivia Fonseca ‘25, Nicolette Xydas ‘25, and Lili Veziroglu ‘26 were tested on a wide range of advanced calculus subjects such as deriving, integrating, and related rates.
During the team competition, calculus students Xydas, Fonseca, Ortiz, and Valdes competed against 34 other schools. They came in 15th with 66 points.
Precalculus students also competed during this time, with Prabhakar, Lie-Nielsen, Diez, and Yu going head to head with other schools from the area, such as Ransom Everglades School and Coral Reef High School. Carrollton’s precalculus students came in 18th out of 29 total schools, with a score of 14 points.
The top three scores from Carrollton for Precalculus-Individual went to Lie-Nielsen, Eljaiek, and Yu. The top three scores from Carrollton for Calculus-Individual went to Fanjul, Valdes, and McMillan.
The Carrollton Mathletes team is now preparing for their upcoming regional competition on March 15 as well as their state competition on April 4-5.
