The National Honors Society at Carrollton is committed to giving back to local communities.
Every Thursday, Raquel Arista ‘25 and Sofia Tilen’s ‘25 host sandwich making events from 3:30 to 4:15 and lead a group of students in Ms. Cuza’s room to create an assembly line for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The tables are joined together covered in paper towels and tubs of peanut butter and jelly. The prepared sandwiches are then donated to the Grove Community Fridge. All are welcome to participate in this act of service.
These sandwich making events help Carrollton Upper School students to connect with local communities and receive service hours for their work.
Arista first realized that “food insecurity affects a lot of inhabitants in and nearby the Grove” after spending so much time in the surrounding neighborhoods of Carrollton. One day, after being told that the Grove Fridge was no longer operating, Arista “was eager to help find a solution for the people that were depending on that fridge to be stocked.” She then proposed and helped create Carrollton’s weekly sandwich-making program to support our neighbors in need.
Starting with only a few juniors in the math room last year, the initiative has grown to include students from all different grade levels. Together, participants have made over 700 sandwiches so far. Stocking the Grove pantry is a true embodiment of Goal Three, engaging in effective action for social change.
If students are looking for ways to get involved, the sandwich making group is looking for underclassmen parents who are willing to deliver the sandwiches to “Polished Coconut” on Grand Avenue, less than 5 minutes from campus. Students should also be on the lookout for weekly emails with a Google sign-up sheet. Each sandwich-making session provides students with the opportunity to earn one direct hour of “Cyclone service.” For more information please email mcuza@carrollton.org.
