For one day out of our busy school year, we come together as a community to bond and help others who need our assistance across the city. This year, Carrollton students and faculty serviced sixteen organizations. They engaged in many different activities from picking up trash at Kampong and The Underline to making arts and crafts with the elderly at St. Anne’s Nursing Home.
This day allowed students to engage with local organizations like Camillus House, The Caring Place, and Chapman Partnership that address important social issues such as homelessness and poverty. In these diverse volunteer sites, students addressed the critical areas of education, healthcare, environment, and support for individuals with special needs.
At Lotus House, a shelter for women and children, students engaged in activities that helped empower the women staying there. At The WOW Center and Miami Learning Experience, organizations focused on helping individuals with developmental disabilities, students had the opportunity to read to students and participate in sing-a-long activities.
Each task, no matter how small, contributed to the overall well-being of Miami, fostering a spirit of unity. Students are able to carry these values with them beyond service day, whether they are just starting out in the high school or leaving for college soon. We are all equipped with the necessary skills to foster community around us.
