Carrollton’s very own Alexandra Kolaya ‘27 and Elizabeth Xydas ‘28 earned the opportunity to represent the United States as the sole U.S. women’s I420 boat team at the Youth Sailing World Championships over winter break. The two sailors traveled all the way to Vilamoura, Portugal, where they competed against the top youth sailors around the world.
Youth Worlds is the most competitive youth event in the sport, with each country allowed to send only its top athletes in each boat class. Qualifying was no easy process, but their performance at this year’s Youth Championships secured their spot.
“Only the top female team and top mixed or men’s team qualify,” said Xydas. “I think that’s the hardest part because only one boat can qualify for your event. Overall, it was a very challenging regatta with a lot of waiting and abandoned races due to the very light wind.”
“This year, we won the entire regatta,” a rare accomplishment, said Kolaya.
After qualifying, Kolaya and Xydas made their way to the beautiful beach town in Portugal filled with sailors and coaches from across the globe. “The hotel was mostly filled with all the competitors; everywhere you turned, you’d meet someone from another country,” said Kolaya.
Despite facing harsh weather conditions and extreme competition, they both challenged themselves and focused on improving each race. “Honestly, it’s a bit intimidating competing at such a high level, but representing team U.S. was so incredible,” said Kolaya.
“The environment was very different,” said Xydas. “We had a new boat and different coaches, but it was a really cool change. It was exciting to adapt as quickly as possible before the racing began.”
One day, the women sailed first. Kolaya and Xydas said it was the windiest they had ever sailed. They even overcame capsizing seconds before the race. “It was insane but so much fun,” said Kolaya. “At a certain point, there is no room to be scared, and you have to take all the risks.”
Despite being disqualified from that specific race, their strong performance under pressure is a testament to this team’s determination and collaboration. They finished in 14th place after competing against the top 20 women’s teams in their boat category.
Looking ahead, Kolaya and Xydas plan to continue sailing together, working toward their goal of improving as a team and competing at the highest level possible.
Their accomplishment marks a first in Carrollton sailing history, and their success is only the beginning.
