As awards season comes to an end, many are wondering what Oscar-worthy movies are coming out in 2025. As we look ahead to films that will come out later this year, several movies are already serious Oscar contenders.
A movie that has just come out in theaters and that has been getting great reviews is “Warfare”. “Warfare” is a real-time war movie based on U.S. Navy SEALs during the Iraq War. A24’s film is directed by Alex Garland and real life former Navy SEAL, Ray Mendoza. It stars several well-known actors including D’Pharaoh Won-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Joseph Quinn, Noah Centineo and Kit Connor.
One of the most anticipated films of the year is “Hamnet” directed by Chloé Zhao, starring Pual Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Joe Alwyn, and Emily Watson. Inspired by Maggie O’Farrell’s novel, the film follows Agnes, William Shakespeare’s wife, as she processes the death of their son, Hamnet. The story draws a connection between their son and Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. As of this moment there is no confirmed release date, but fans of the novel are excited to see how it will be adapted to screen.
Another film that many are looking forward to is the new “Avatar.” The first “Avatar” directed by James Cameron came out in 2009, followed by a sequel in 2022. Now, a third movie, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” is scheduled to come out in December 2025. The “Avatar” films follow Jake Sully, a former Marine who becomes part of the Na’vi on the alien moon Pandora and fights to protect their world from human exploitation. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” is expected to dive deeper into tensions between the Na’vi and humans along with conflicts within the clan. Several cast members are returning including Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang.
Many people believe that the best movie of 2024 was “Wicked” and Ariana Grande And Cynthia Erivo were snubbed when it came to Best Actress and Supporting Actress. Luckily, on November 21, 2025 the second part “Wicked: For Good” will be released giving them another opportunity to earn an Oscar.
Some other Oscar contenders for 2025 include:
- “Mickey 17” – This sci-fi thriller came out on March 7, directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Robert Pattinson. It follows an ordinary worker on a human expedition.
- “Martey Supreme” – Not much is known about this movie, but it is said to be a fictionalized original story inspired by the life of table tennis player Marty Reisman, directed by Josh Safdie and starring Timothée Chalamet.
- “How to Train Your Dragon” (Live-Action) – Everyone knows and loves the animated film, but now after a long wait, “How to Train Your Dragon” (Live- Action) is expected to come out this summer. It is directed by Dean DeBlois and starring Mason Thames and Nico Parker.
- “Materialists” – Directed by Celine Song and starring Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal, this romantic drama is set in New York City where a matchmaker’s love life gets complicated.
- “Frankenstein” – After many movies already based on this fictional character, we are getting another. This version will be directed by Guillermo del Toro and star Oscar Isacc and Jacob Elordi. With more and more movies being announced and released this year, it is an exciting year for the movie industry and especially for the upcoming Academy Awards.
