University of Georgia Bulldog National Debate Tournament

Ariana Arvanitis

This past weekend, Carrollton competed at the annual University of Georgia Bulldog National Debate Tournament in Athens, Georgia which is a small university town about 2 hours away from Atlanta, Georgia’s capital. The team of Caroline Culmo ’20 and Gabriela Garity ’20 advanced to the octofinal round, which is the first round of eliminations amongst the top 16 teams.

Our senior team of Jasmine Agreda and Cecilia de la Guardia, after an impressive 6-0 preliminary record, advanced straight to the quarterfinals and won on decisive 3-0 against a junior team from Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. In the semifinals, Agreda and de la Guardia won on a 2-1, impressively avenging a previous defeat from another team from Montgomery Bell Academy, this time a sophomore and a senior combination. Ultimately, Agreda and de la Guardia won the varsity division of the debate tournament against a team from Wayzata in Hennepin County, Minnesota.

Agreda also received the 4th place speaker award, and de la Guardia received the 3rd place speaker award. Congratulates to all teams who competed this past weekend, winning is truly an honor! We look forward to Carrollton’s final two debate tournaments this season. The next is this upcoming weekend at Woodward Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, and the final one is the National Debate Coaches Association Tournament in Chicago, Illinois.
