Saving the Environment One Sneaker at a Time

“For way too long, the politicians and the people in power have gotten away with not doing anything at all to fight the climate crisis and the ecological crisis, but we will make sure that they will not get away with it any longer.”- Greta Thunberg

Saving the environment is the topic of many headlines and it seems like no one can stop talking about it. Athletic shoe brands have come into the spotlight because of their effort to make more sustainable products.

Shoes are a big part of the fashion industry and sneakers are the best way to comfortably complete a look. What people do not know is that most sneakers are very harmful to the environment and sit in landfills for years. The plastic insoles and footbeds are not biodegradable and that is another cause of pollution. Sneaker brands are now trying to make shoes that are not only comfy and visually compelling but also eco-friendly.

Some brands that are succeeding are Adidas, Nike, Tread, Veja, and Reebok. Each sneaker was given a 4 or higher out of a scale of 5 Customer Satisfaction Score and are making appearances in headlines and fashion magazines. Tread’s Everlane Tread Trainer sneakers with a perfect rating of 5 stars were said to be one of the most comfortable shoes and carry a reasonable price tag of $98. The prices of the sneakers were more on the pricier side ranging from $80-$180.

For a good selection of eco-friendly sneakers, Uniguide is a good source.
