Right as the Carrollton community began its Thanksgiving break, the debate team traveled to Atlanta, Georgia for the Westminster Tournament. Carrollton featured teams in the novice, junior varsity, and varsity divisions. Across every field, 162
debaters were in attendance. Each division hosted multiple teams from Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Washington, D.C, and Florida.
After a 4-2 preliminary record in the varsity division, the team of Ariana Arvanitis (’20) and Emma Beharry (’22) advanced to the octafinals where they impressively defeated a team from Atlanta. Carrollton’s only senior-sophomore team then competed in the quarterfinals also against a team from Atlanta but was defeated by a very slim margin on a 2-1 decision. Also in the varsity division, the team of Caroline Culmo (’20) and Gabriela Garity (’20) scored a 4-2 preliminary record, then advanced to the octafinals where they lost to a team from Atlanta as well. In the junior varsity division, with a 4-2 preliminary record, the team of Isabela Alia-Arias (‘22) and Alexandra Menendez (‘22) went straight to the semi-finals but lost against a team from Atlanta as well.

Carrollton’s varsity debaters will be attending their next tournament at the University of Texas-Austin this upcoming weekend, which will conclude the semester one season. We are looking forward to the successes the semester two season will bring as the debate team continues to compete on the national circuit, bringing pride to Carrollton as a school.
